Solving Parking Problems with Bicycles & Motor Scooters
How is this for High Density Parking - over 400 bicycles inside York train station.
What you say, you can't tell those are all bicycles - here is a closer look.
Is this a safe place? Almost the entire station can see these bikes and the staff break room and lockers are at one end right next to the office for the bicycle rental people. there was no occasion when I was near the bikes that someone had not seen me there. Notice the man at the end - he is staff going to the break room.
How do you keep 400 bikes in order? The U bar keeps them all parallel and controls the angle. Two rows of U Bars allows easy entry and exit. A third row can be added with an open space between each bar to allow access to the other two rows. Here is a shot of one row to show how the bars work. This shot only has one bike per bar but you can put one on each side.
High Density parking is also possible with Motor Scooters and Motorcycles. Here is a shot with nine bikes in one parking space next to a retail area.
These same bikes would spend the night in a residential space similar to this one.
Not only are these bikes high density but they can be parked in places cars would not work.
Here is a shot of two row motorcycle parking with the exit area marked off. The exit lane is between 4 and 5 feet wide and each parking space is about 3 ft by 7 1/2 feet. Note the bicycle exit row is even narrower ( about 2 ft) at the top of the photo.
