Here is the letter:

September 19th.

Dear Honorable Council Members:

This letter is to support the establishing of concrete and meaningful

goals for the Land Use and Circulation Elements of the General

plan.

We support a sustainable transportation system.  Sustainability

calls for minimizing our dependence on petroleum and maximizing

our use of renewable energy sources including electric and human

powered vehicles.  The urgency of these pressing problems calls

for strong leadership in these areas.

Toward this end the Sustainable Transport Club supports the

alternative language for both the Circulation and Land Use

Elements.  We would encourage you to consider even stronger

language in the direction of sustainability by making the following

adjustments:

More Sustainable Language  (changes have an * at the beginning

and end *)

Effective Transportation System: we are a community that

strives for everyone to get where they need to go comfortably, and

where walking, bicycling and riding transit *increasingly replace*

auto trips to reduce congestion and maintain mobility *and

physical and emotional health* as travel demand grows

Well Designed Spaces: we are a community that strives for

quality designed public spaces that foster quick and comfortable

access *through proximity to local destinations,* enjoyment of the

outdoors, and social interaction

Community Care: we are a community that strives for a

transportation system that enables residents and visitors to reach

and participate fully in the community's cultural, educational and

commercial opportunities *while also pursuing fitness with

physically active travel options.*

Local Identity/Regional Context: we are a community that

strives for people to be able to travel easily within Santa Monica

and to and from regional destinations *using all forms of travel*

Environmental Responsibility: we are a community that strives

for a transportation system that minimizes, and where possible

eliminates, pollution, *vehicle congestion, and non-renewable

energy consumption in favor of using renewable sources of energy.*

Please consider including these in the current level of goal setting

or at the very least having them included in the up coming work

book process.

The concern of the group is to have sustainability specified as a

priority in the Circulation Element of the General Plan.  Anything

less would support the status quo of driving our oversized vehicles

toward the cliff of limited oil supply and unacceptable

environmental consequences in a lemming like manner.

We are in the process of getting support for this concept from a

wide range of groups that shares this vision of a sustainable future.

We will keep you updated on this growing base of support.

Appreciatively yours

For the Sustainable Transport Club
