Dear Green Activists:

Here is the first newsletter from the Sustainable Transportation
Club.  This is one of the recent spin offs from the Westside Greens and a
separate mailing list is being built for this group. I would be happy to
include you in the future mailings but they will be sent from a separate
mailing system.  Those of you who are interested can sign on to that list
at www.Sustainabletransportclub.com.  Some of this information will
come through the general mailings but if you really want to be kept up on
the activities of our Sustainable Transportation Club. It is best for you to
join the list.

Please feel free to forward this to as many people you know that

might be interested in being part of this.  It is a way to connect to
your friends who have not yet registered Green.

Thanks

Russell Sydney

September 10th Electric Vehicle Event hits the TV This Thursday.

The Electric Vehicle event that so many of us helped make a
success will be featured in a half hour TV program on Sustainable
Transportation. The program includes part of Paul’s presentation
about Don’t Crush and the presentation of the commendation to
Paul and Chelsea by Kevin McKeown. There is also a really good
shot of all the electric vehicles as well as one with the group in
front of the collection.  You may be on TV this week!

The program does a good job of describing the need for sustainable
transport as well as making a clear case for people working
together through groups like our Sustainable Transportation Club.

Please let people know about this who might be interested in
joining our group.

The details are as follows:
What – Save Cash by not using Gas  - Sustainable Transportation
Alternatives
When- Thursday night October 29th at 9:30 pm
Where  - Adelphia Cable Local Access Channel, Number 77 in
Westside, Santa Monica, Malibu area.  Your cable set up may vary
so look for the public access channel before the airtime to be
prepared.

If you do not live in the area there are two things you can do.  One
is to help get the word out by connecting us to the public access
channels in your area.  The other is to get the DVD so you can
show your friends and local groups.

The DVD of this program is something we can use to spread the
word. It is available for showing to local group and any other way
you can think of to help spread the word.

Request for feedback about our next step

There are many things we can do as our next step to help build the
size and momentum of our group.  The group is to support each of
us in getting what we need from our transportation alternative and
to help build these alternatives into something that can be enjoyed
by as many people as possible.

Each of our alternatives has its own challenges that will require the
support of other people in our community.  Electric vehicles are
limited by the neighbor hood electric vehicle speed limit of 25
mph.  It will take community support to get that up to 30 or 35
mph which makes the vehicles much more useful.  Bio diesel
people need local filling stations.  The community can help with
that.  Each of us will prosper by being connected to larger and
larger support groups.

So what can we do to build up a network of people willing to
support a whole range of alternatives to our oil addiction?

You have a say in how this group moves forward. You can help us
by giving your opinion about what you think would be a good next
step to get people involved in solving our own transportation
needs.

Please rank the following as to how interested you think people
would be:

· Electric Vehicle Show and tell – take our great array of
vehicles and show them to people at events, fairs and public
gathering places.  The vehicles that showed on Sept 10th are an
impressive presentation that makes it clear that electric vehicles are
a viable alternative.
We could make our next showing at the Calstart Event!

· Hybrid Cars – what works and how to upgrade them to
plug-in Hybrids
· Two wheel alternatives – fuel saving and pedal power
alternatives on two wheels. Bring together bicycles, motor
scooters, motor bikes etc and get people from this group on board.

· Bicycle power – solutions that work and how to build them
into your lifestyle
· Bio diesel  - what it is and how to get involved
· Mass Transit – getting rail links to the Westside and other
challenges bring people from various mass transit groups together
to air their concerns.

· Study/work group to brainstorm about the strategy for
moving forward and to share knowledge and information.

· Your best idea – it may be better than any of the above.

You can also help by letting us know how you would like to
participate in helping to create a larger network.  Are there things
you are good at that could help the effort? Do you have ideas we
could incorporate into what we are doing?

Please email your responses back to sustain@rsydney.com.

New Generation of Electric Motor scooter here and being tested

There is a new generation of electric motor scooters that is coming
out of China.  These are higher-powered 1500 watt and 2000watt
brushless motors with “Green Power Batteries”.  A shipment of
these was recently delivered for testing and evaluation.  US Hybrid
will be testing on a technical level and there is one 1500watt here
on the west side that is being tested for practical application in our
area.

These have specifications that include better torque, better take off,
better hill climbing, and longer range.  The “Green Power
Batteries” are described as using silicates which is a little
mysterious. They are specified to have higher density than gel cells
and to deliver their current more evenly and consistently.  These
are supposed to result in significantly longer range. They do have
lead in them and may be an advanced version of the AGM
batteries.

Once the initial testing and modifications are made the 1500watt
will be available for local test rides. Those of you who are
interested please email rides@rsydney.com.

Calstart Event here in LA – Focus for Plug in America

Paul Scott and Plug in America are focusing on getting a good
response out of the upcoming event being sponsored by Calstart.
This is a good chance to show support for plug in electric and to
learn about related alternatives in tranportation.

For those of you who have not heard – Plug in America is the next
incarnation of Don’t Crush.  This good group is moving into an
educational and awareness program to promote plug in electric
vehicles.
