Organizing around WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR ?

Westwood - Grand opening June 24th Green Day Fair

This event is going to be amazing.  Lots of our Club members will

be there and will be helping to get the word out about

sustainability.  We should get lots of new names for our mailing

list as a result.  Come on down  - the more the merrier.

The event will also feature the display of lots of EV’s.  This will

possibly be the largest collection of EV’s ever in California.  The

Club will show up with the light weight electric vehicles and has

arranged for one of our newest members to bring really cool

looking NEV that is designed to look like a Roadster.

Those interested in getting an EV can check out the article below

to prepare for this event.

Here is the info again in case you missed the last announcement.

Grand opening June 24, 2006 at 12:45pm

Location: Landmark Regent Theater:

1045 Broxton Avenue, Los Angeles, (Westwood)

The Green Day Fair should be set up by noon and will run at least

through the afternoon.  It will be in the parking lot next to the

theater.  The cars should all be in place by 10:00 if that is your

interest.

There is lots more to be done after the grand opening and in

preparation for it.  The openings in various areas near by should

also be a lot of fun and are a chance for us to do what we can to get

the word out.  The next article will help you check out what is

happening in the different areas

            Stickers and flyers

– available at Hastings Plastics in SM and other ways

Plug in America has some cool flyers and stickers available to help

get the movie into people minds.  This is real gorilla marketing

stuff that could just work.

The idea is to get the stickers to show up in high traffic areas so

people start to focus on the movie and the idea of electric cars.  I

have already put them in strategic places in my neighborhood and

it would be great if you could do the same.

The flyers are a good way to let your friends and neighbors know

about the movies. There are fancy glossy ones available and you

can print out simple ones from the file on line at

www.sustainabletransportclub.com.  I am thinking I will get one of

the simple ones to everyone in my condo complex as well as at

work.  I like the idea of using the glossy ones for the local coffee

houses and in the restaurants.

Of course this all assumes you have already forwarded the

information to you entire email list………(see the last newsletter)

You can pick up a hand full of flyers and stickers at Hastings

Plastics, 1704 Colorado Ave, Santa Monica CA 90405 at the

corner of Colorado and 17th.. You can also email a request for

some to pscottvfx@earthlink.net or call Paul at 399-5997.  He is in

the heart of this effort right now so please respect his time during

the crunch this next week or so and he would love to get you the

stickers and flyers.

Santa Monica – Nu Art Wilshire June 28th

                 - opening day splash

Several of you have said you will make this opening and Plug in

America is also focusing on this one.  We can all join in and make

the opening a splash that will get some attention for the movie.

There will be some kind of EV presence at this one – the RAV4’s

will be there and so will a scooter or two.  Plug in America will

have the lead on this one so we can jump in and provide support.

Let me know how you want to help.  We can hand out flyers as

people enter and exit as well as getting sign-ups for the club on the

way out. Email movie@rsydney.com These are possible to do and

still see the movie.

All these openings are the good ones to come to with a large group

of friends. If not the actual opening then for sure the first weekend.

By kicking things off in your area you help to build the buzzzzzzz.

Hollywood – Arc Light June 28th opening day splash

Plug in America has two of the actors in the movie organizing

things for this opening in Hollywood.  That means an EV presence

and a chance to help out.

Email us to get involved –  pscottvfx@earthlink.net

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Encino – June 30th opening day splash

This Friday opening is a chance to get the Sustainable Transport

Club going in the Valley. It is two days after the Santa Monica and

Hollywood openings.

Anyone with an interest in seeing the Valley get organized around

Sustainable Transport and/or connected to our work please let me

know and we can get on this one.  We can talk about this at the

previous openings to see what we want to do.

Email us to get involved - movie@rsydney.com

Orange County – June 30th opening day splash

Plug In America is going after openings in Orange County. They will be organizing for this and we can help.  Anyone who is inclined to spend Friday down there can jump in with the really fun folks they have in that area.  They will have EV’s on site and other activities planned.

The first opening down there will be:

EDW SO COAST VILLAGE 3 COSTA MESA CA 6/30/2006

There are others scheduled for July 14th.

Email us to get involved –  pscottvfx@earthlink.net

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Santa Barbara – July 14th opening day splash

Santa Barbara is ripe for a chapter of the Sustainable Transport

Club.  We have a strong member there with the people at the Santa

Barbara Electric Bicycle Company.  They are interested in working

things up around this opening.

We have two weeks to work this one up.  Who do you know in

Santa Barbara – send them an email.  If they have activist

tendencies then get them signed up for the club newsletter – www.sustainabletransportclub.com

If they are not activist oriented then invite them to the take friends

to the movie.

We could car pool or take the train up to work this event and get

Santa Barbara connected to our efforts down here and us connected

to their work.  That is how we expand this grass roots effort and

build the network that will help create our sustainable future.

      EV’s on Display this Saturday

Anyone interested in getting on the Electric vehicle bandwagon

will have a great chance to see what the technology looks like this

weekend.  The Grand Opening in Westwood (details above) is

bringing together possibly the best display of EV’s ever in

California.

And many of these are available for purchase.

You can talk to the people who drive them and find out how they

work out in real life.  Just so you know – they are great.

EV’s have a different way about them and it takes thinking outside

the gas-powered auto to understand them.  There are two key

questions to ask your self when thinking about using EV’s.  These are:

How many miles do I travel around by immediate neighborhood on

a typical day?

How much of my time is spent going faster than 30 miles an hour

and how much time is spent stopped at a red light?

Ok, that last one is two questions combined but that is because

they are connected.  NEV and bicycle riders understand why they

are connected because we spend lots of time watching people

speed past us only to overtake them at the next red light.  The

actual speed across town has to take that stopping into account.

Once you have answered these two questions then you are ready to

see if an EV might fit into your life as an alternative to the fume

spewing internal combustion machines you use now.

Come on over on Saturday and join the zero emissions club.

Extreme MPG – Power requirements for electric scooters

            How does 400mpg sound!

That is how the rough numbers work out on the electric scooters.

Here is the basic formula using numbers given by two

manufactures and the electrical and gasoline prices in our area:

30 miles per charge / 2 kWh per charge = 15 miles per kilowatt-hour

at 12.7 cents per kilowatt-hour for residential power that is 0.85 cents per mile

At $3.40 per gallon that works out to equivalent to 401 mpg

There is another basis for comparison and that is to use the energy

in the electricity compared to the energy in the gasoline.

1 kilowatt-hour of electricity = 3413 British thermal unit (Btu)

1 U.S. Gallon of gasoline = 114,132 btu

These work out to

33.45 kWh/gallon of gas

at 15 Miles/ kilowatt-hour

that comes to 502 mpg

That is EXTREME MPG - but does reality match these calculations.

Hooking up a power meter to the charger for the scooters lets us

track the amount of electricity used to power the scooters for a

specific distance.

Using a 1000-watt brush less motor on 40 amp hour gel cell

batteries we attained the following results:

Miles driven = 81

Kilowatt hours used = 9.8

That works out to 8.27 miles per kilowatt-hour or 1.56 cents per mile or

220 mpg equivalent.

There is, however, another part of that picture.  That is the part

where the gel cells have a charging pattern that is not fully

explored at this writing.  The batteries charge up to full voltage and

the chargers shut off.  Then they rest for a while and the charger

kick in again.  This continues as long as the charger is connected.

This adds extra kilowatt-hours of charging that are included in

these calculations.  IF we do not include this, then the equation

works out at 14.4 miles per kilowatt-hour.  Which puts us back on

the manufactures numbers.

The Silicon batteries do not have this characteristic.  The chargers

for these shut off once and then no more charging occurs.  Silicon

batteries left for three weeks will only take 1/10th of a kilowatt-

hour before they stop charging.  Tests are underway to see how

this works out when using these batteries.

MoveOn.org is pushing “Oil Free” initiative.

Most of you are probably tuned into MoveOn – but just in case…

Last month, 3 million MoveOn members came together and said,

"Enough. We want clean, renewable energy, and we want it now!"

That's why today, we're launching one of our biggest campaigns in

the last year—-a campaign for an "Oil-free Congress" to demand

that Congress end America's oil addiction and move us toward a

cleaner future. We'll pressure members of Congress to make a real

difference—-and if they don't listen, we'll hold them accountable

in November.

To start, we need to ask every member of Congress, including

yours, to go "Oil-Free" and sign a pledge not to take any money

from the oil industry. Can you sign this letter telling Rep. Waxman

to take the pledge?

http://political.moveon.org/oilfree/?id=8072-4255632-jQKK8sx.wc3RxErcPptnfg&t=3

We're working with a bunch of groups, like Oil Change

International and the Center for American Progress in the

Separation of Oil and State coalition to get every representative to

sign the pledge not to take any more oil money. Together, we sent

official pledge cards to all of Congress last week. But this call will

be much more powerful if Rep. Waxman hears from thousands of

his constituents about it, too.
